Skilled nursing facility relocates

At a time when University Medical Center is preparing to move several services to the downtown Community Regional Medical Center, one service made the opposite move.

DeWitt Subacute and Skilled Nursing Center, which had been located on the east side of the emergency department at Community Regional since 1995, moved April 13 to the third floor of UMC.

“Everything went wonderful. It went very smooth,” said Lynn Bennink, trauma program director.

During a six-hour span, 31 patients were successfully moved using four ambulances in rotation for the two-mile trek between the two hospitals. The first patient was moved at 8:50 a.m., and the last at 2:50 p.m.

DeWitt specializes in chronic, subacute conditions that include care of tracheotomy, gastrostomy, ventilator and wounds with the advantage of hospital-based resources.

“Things went really well today,” said Bruce Kinder, vice president of academic affairs. “The patient move event moved along just as planned – right on time, right on schedule.”
