California Cancer Center again earns top accreditation

“What this achievement means to our patients is that they will be evaluated and treated at the premier cancer center in the region,” said Dr. Brent Kane, medical director of radiation oncology at the California Cancer Center and the Marjorie E. Radin Breast Care Center. “They will have access to cancer treatments and research unavailable at other cancer programs in the region.”

Patients looking for weight-loss surgery are definitely checking first for top ratings and certifications from outside reviewers, said bariatric surgeon Edward L. Felix – or at least they should be. “The difference in morbidity and mortality between a Center of Excellence hospital and one that’s not, is significant. Most insurance carriers and Medicare won’t even pay for people who don’t go to a Center of Excellence.”  see video

He was held back in the seventh grade, voted least likely to succeed at his high school graduation and told by his military commanding officer he didn’t have what it took to become a physician. While these adversities would have turned most away – Dr. Jack Schiff used them as stepping stones and created a lasting legacy.

Congestive heart failure patients find new relief

Community Regional Medical Center was the first in the Valley to invest in the Aquadex FlexFlow systems that remove excess fluid from the patient with an advanced form of ultrafiltration called Aquapherisis therapy. Mary Cornell, 69, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF) and was the first patient to be treated with the ultrafiltration system.

Hospital system’s “community benefits:” $149 million

Community Medical Centers provided nearly $149 million in uncompensated services to the medically underserved in fiscal year 2008-2009, equivalent to nearly 15% of its total expenses, according to the nonprofit hospital system’s annual community benefits report filed with the State of California. Community has historically spent more on uncompensated community benefits than all other Fresno-area hospitals combined. And, some years, nearly double their combined total.
